Thoughts on City of Culture

Two years is a very short time in organising a major event such as a City of Culture, so here are a few thoughts to get a dialogue going:

At the lowest level, could anyone believe that an event such as Glastonbury would be cancelled due to a shortage of temporary toilets?

More importantly with the Olympic Games coming before Derry/Londonderry City of Culture, will potential sponsors/advertisers be in a position to calculate the advantage of participation here?

Nearer home, what funding might be drawn from the City - or more to the point - what monies will be available to the City or the North West - after Belfast has organised the National “Police/Fire Services Games” and of course the resources which will be required to launch the new Olympic sized swim centre in Bangor.

Could the local papers and Foyle Radio be asked to dedicate a regular weekly progress report?

The list could go on - Think - The Pipe Band championships, Head of the River races, a Banks of the Foyle half marathon starting at Brandywell and ending at Ebrington Barracks etc etc..

With fewer foreign holidays at the moment, has the idea of approaching a shipping line for a regular “Scotch boat” during the Culture Year been considered?

Beginning January 2011 a graph could be painted on one wall of the Guildhall Square office for ‘pencilling in’ potential events, thus encouraging more people to become involved.
